The varied narrative modes of the six suspects are a nice touch; I especially liked Jagannath Rai's phone conversations. Swarup writes well, but this is not a "literary" work. His descriptions are vivid, but not necessarily intricate, and character development is a non-factor. Rather, the characters are heavily stereotypical, but aside from Larry Page's Deep-South similes these stereotypes don't take away from the entertainment value.
As an Indian myself, I can understand my countrymen being turned off by things we've seen too often in Bollywood movies e. Gandhi hallucinations or in real life e. Those lacking such familiarity with India, however, will not have the same issues.
The book leans towards having the feel of something written for the screen. If you liked Swarup's first novel, you'll enjoy "Six Suspects". I found this novel to be interesting but at the end too involved and six suspects ebook free download. It is recommended to those who have time to spare and who would like to get some understanding of politics in India.

Despite being about as unlikely a collection of people as can be imagined, each has a motive for shooting the horrible rich kid who is almost a caricature of nastiness. They range from a Bollywood actress to a man from a remote tribe on the Andaman islands; a dim white American to a wily young thief from slums; and from the boy's own father to a corrupt politician who thinks he's been possessed by Gandhi.
The novel focusses on each of the six in turn, in two sections. The first sets the scene for each of the characters, the second describes the events that give each a six suspects ebook free download. This takes up most of the novel, with just a short section at the end to tie things up and of course, reveal the culprit.
This provides a fascinating portrait of disparate aspects of life in modern India, however some sections are wildly implausible and some of the characters are too extreme to be believable. I suspect this is intentional in the writing - i.
But that style never works too well for me. I think the main problem with this book though is the structure. The chapters are just too long. It would have worked better in my opinion to have shorter chapters and move more frequently between the characters.
By the time I'd finished the very long section on each suspect, I'd forgotten all about the others and found myself trying frantically to remember the background to the character I was reading about. Certainly 'Six 'Suspects' has many good aspects, and I often enjoyed reading it and found particular sections very intriguing. If only it could all hang together better to give a smoother reading experience.
